Barbados Identity: The History Behind the Chattel House

A Symbol of Self-Determination. In a world where landlessness was designed as a type of control, the goods house overturned the system. It offered autonomy without consent. It made the poorest people in Barbados into homeowners-- by themselves terms, in structures built with skill, pride, and communal labour.
When a household saved adequate cash to buy land, the house would travel with them-- lifted, well balanced, and carried like a treasure. Neighbours showed up with ropes, lever boards, and laughter. Kids ran next to the procession. Elders blessed the course with a peaceful nod.
" This is what you should understand," he stated. "We didn't wait on no one to hand us identity. We construct it board by board."
And because simple truth lies the depth of the Barbadian spirit.
