3 Days in Magical Madrid

Enjoy the latest blob by the Avid Traveller:

In the Autumn of 2024, Calum Glenny, the Avid Travellrer embarked on a whirlwind 72-hour trip to Madrid with good friends, beginning with a dynamic, history-filled city exploration. Our centrally located hotel on Calle de Atocha made it easy to gain access to Madrid's cultural and culinary highlights. Walking through dynamic squares, we immersed ourselves in the city's history and vibrant environment.

Our group's varied preferences caused different activities. Suzanne and Richard started the very firstday 1 night with a remarkable supper at Bodega de los Secretos, a relaxing, centuries-old dining establishment full of beauty. On day 2 my better half and I joined a tapas and red wine walking tour led by the enthusiastic Mario. We went to a number of local hotspots, consisting of a mushroom specialized bar and an Iberian delicatessen, while learning more about Madrid's history and culture.

Day three was all about cooking, with Pamela and Bill setting up a paella masterclass at the glamorous Ritz Mandarin Oriental. Chef Oliver Menendez guided us through the intricacies of making standard Valencian paella and black rice with squid and lobster. The experience was coupled with tastings of local sherries and wines, making it one of the journey's highlights.

We rounded off the weekend with a visit to Teatro Flamenco Madrid. This intimate venue showcased the raw feeling and beauty of flamenco dancing, providing a perfect cultural capstone.

Throughout the journey, we took pleasure in extraordinary meals at regional dining establishments like Casa Verona and Casa Alberto, where we enjoyed authentic Spanish meals such as anchovies in olive oil, croquettes, and even the renowned calamari sandwich. The Mercado de San Miguel was another standout, providing a look into Spain's abundant culinary traditions.
